I promise I won't tell B but I really need to know how to label him. I am supremely confident that I cannot label him as a "good sleeper" but I really can't tell if he is a "bad sleeper" or an "abysmal sleeper." It's really not that I need to put my son in a box, I need to put my own suffering in a box. There is absolutely no intrinsic reward to staying up all night so I need words and labels to keep me going. I would like a badge to wear on my girl scout sash that says I am surviving this so that the world will know my suffering.

Basically, I think that B is in the "abysmal sleeping" category but I might think that because everyone else is lying. Am I really suffering more than most or is everyone else just suffering silently while I am whining?

I also need to know how much of the recent sleeping troubles can be blamed on the emergence of B's first tooth. Is there hope this will get better? Until the next tooth anyways? If I had to guess the answer is no, there is no hope. There will always be something. I think I'm going to start documenting his nights here so that I can somehow use this all against him later.

I think you are right--a lot of people take one small good stretch and maybe they just want to believe that's how it is the majority of the time! I hate to say it, but unless you resort to whiskey, which would add a label to you and eventually B, from what I hear teething does even "the best sleepers ever" in. A friend of mine's kid was sleeping 6-8 hour stretches at 4 weeks but then when teeth started coming in sleep regressed. If only they would all come in at one time...very painful yes, but I would take the one bad stretch vs one by one--for the baby's sake of course!
ReplyDeleteB had probably 3 good weeks of "sleeping through the night" and I held onto that as his normal for so long. Now that he's been horrible for at least 8 weeks I'm ready to admit that those 3 weeks were actually the aberration and this is our normal. Sigh. I hope your experience is better!
DeleteSooooo.... Z is a terrible sleeper. She still wakes up twice a night, at 13 months. At least I can feed her and she goes right back to sleep, but I feel like I should be doing something to help her sleep better maybe. Don't even get me started on nap schedules.
